What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an arrangement (commercially or altruistically) whereby a woman (Surrogate) agrees to gestate for others (Intended Parents) to raise. The Surrogate will carry a fetus in her womb from conception to birth. Depending on the type of surrogacy arrangement, the child born through surrogacy may or may not be genetically linked to the Surrogate.

Is surrogacy legal in Canada?

Yes, surrogacy in Canada is a legal pregnancy system.

I am in a same-sex relationship. Can I go on a surrogacy journey in Canada?

Yes, Canada is extremely progressive and is extremely open to all types of people. You can go on a Canadian surrogacy journey regardless of whether you are single, partnered, married, a heterosexual or on any of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

How much will it cost to have a child through surrogacy?

The cost to have a child through surrogacy varies from person to person. Your specific situation is different from the next individual. Contact us to discuss what you’re looking for, and we will explain the costs involved.

How long is a surrogacy journey?

Typically, the length of time from the day you start your journey can be anywhere from 1.5–3 years. However, there are many factors affecting the length of time, and every surrogacy journey is unique to everyone.

Do Canadian Egg Donors and Surrogates get paid?

No, surrogacy in Canada is an altruistic process. The Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA) in Canada criminalizes commercial surrogacy in Canada and states that Egg Donors and Surrogates can’t be paid, however, they have to be reimbursed for all egg donations or pregnancy-related expenses.

Can a Canadian Egg Donor and Surrogate be the same person?

That is considered a traditional surrogacy process. It is uncommon for Egg Donors to be the same as the Surrogate due to the different requirements for both parties. International Intended Parents tend to have both parties separate, bringing it in line with a gestational surrogacy process.

What types of Egg Donors are there?

In Canada, there are generally three types of Egg Donors – Known, Anonymous, and Semi-Anonymous. 18 years of age is allowed to reach out to the original Egg Donor agency to request information about the donor, which the agency will reach out to the donor to ask if she is willing to disclose her identity. 

Can I send my Egg Donor and Surrogate gifts and money to thank her?

No, as surrogacy in Canada is an altruistic process, it is illegal for Egg Donors and Surrogates to receive any monetary benefits from their matched Intended Parents throughout their journey. Any small tokens of appreciation such as flowers or chocolates may be given, but it is best to consult your surrogacy agency before sending any gifts.

I am partnered/married. Will both our names be on the birth certificate?

Yes, in most Canadian provinces you and your partner’s details will appear on the birth certificate regardless of whether you are single, partnered, married, a heterosexual or on any of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. Getting both the Intended Parents onto the Birth Certificate will depend on which province the baby is born in.

How much contact do Surrogates like during their surrogacy journey?

Every Surrogate is unique. The surrogacy agency that you decide to work with will match you with someone with the same ideas and desires for their journey as you. For example, if you would like to be a big part of the surrogacy process and want lots of contact from the Surrogate, your surrogacy agency will make it a point to find a Surrogate who also wants the same.

Are you going to hold my hand through the entire surrogacy journey?

We are not a concierge service whereby we see your journey from beginning to end. We strongly believe that a concierge-service model does not work well.  

That is why Canada Surrogacy Consultants is founded – to give Intended Parents all the knowledge and the immediate guidance to navigate the entire journey. 

I am not a resident of Australia and living in another country. Can I still sign up for your Masterclass?

Of course, you can. Even though the Masterclass is designed for Australians, most of the information provided to future parents is definitely applicable to you. Some information may not apply, and we will advise you on that during our free 45-minute consultation.

What happens after the Masterclass?

After completion the Masterclass of Surrogacy in Canada, you will be fully armed with all the information that you need to get through your surrogacy journey smoothly and with less stress. You will know what you need to do at whichever stage you are in, and will know how to navigate it effectively. The Masterclass is designed in a way that you will be able to be the captain of your own journey and shouldn’t require any hand-holding or follow-ups.

That said, should you prefer to have more contact with us or need further advice after the Masterclass, you can let us know during the free consultation, during the Masterclass, or after completing the Masterclass. We can tailor follow-up sessions at specific major stages of your surrogacy journey or have ad hoc sessions whenever you require. We are flexible in the way we continue our services after completing the Masterclass.
